Presentation
‘Death and ritual in Álava’ is a selection of photographs related to the culture of death in our territory. Combining materials from different archives in the city, including images by prominent photographers such as Gerardo López de Guereñu, Ceferino Yanguas and Alberto Schommer Koch, and from the extensive documentary collections of the Fundación Sancho el Sabio Vital Fundazioa, visitors can learn about ancient customs linked to the day of the dead, the way in which our ancestors managed death, how the deceased were commemorated or the forms of memory connected with mourning and mourning. The exhibition aims to promote a more open and complex look at a subject that is often avoided or postponed and to reflect on the transformation of these rites and beliefs in our times.
The exhibition also makes the chosen space a protagonist, the very headquarters of the Sancho el Sabio Vital Fundazioa Foundation since 2009 which, until less than two decades ago, served as the cemetery of the Discalced Carmelite nuns.
The exhibition is one of the main attractions of the programme of the first edition of the ZAKATUMBA Festival, an event devised jointly by Sans Soleil Ediciones and Kultur Gasteiz.
